New glasses—again
I HAD a quick trip to UP–Diliman today: lunch with Manong Ralph at Chocolate Kiss, and a visit to Nella Sarabia's optical shop at the UP Shopping Center, still my favorite eyeglasses store of all time. We were glad to see it in operation on a weekend; we usually call to make sure.
Dr. Sarabia recognized us when we opened the glass door. "The Catedrals! Who is the lawyer and the doctor?" She showed us our records. Mine was still labeled "BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology;" I filled out that index card in 2005. I picked a faux-wood frame with neon green highlights. Manong had almost-rectangular tortoise shell frames. She approved of them. "You all look scholarly!"
I went to be examined first, and for the many times I have visited, she has never failed to ask if I was tired, and that would be the end of the conversation. But I was relaxed, and she proceeded with placing lenses in front of me, asking me if the letters in line seven of the Snellen chart were clear.
She gave us a huge discount. We'll get our new pairs in three days.
