Tips for the young student
SHARED MY TESTIMONY at the Youth's Grad Fellowship yesterday. Here's how I ended my 15-minute talk:
After having studied longer than most of you, I think I'm already in a position to give you pieces of advice, things that will probably help you in your Christian walk.
Read your Bible and pray every day. This all too familiar Sunday school song is really the secret to success to a vibrant, growing Christian life. Jesus sets a wonderful example for us. When He went on medical missions (He was the best doctor who ever walked this earth) that left Him exhausted, He still found time to pray. He woke up very early in the morning to find a quiet place and talk to His Father. I wish I could say that I was able to keep my quiet times perfectly, but I couldn't. When I did read the Bible I found joy, refreshment, encouragement, and instruction.
Keep your Christian friends close. Cultivate friendships in church, especially in the Youth, or in your schools. They will minister to you and encourage you with God's promises. They will even rebuke you if you stray away.
Read Christian literature. When I read Dietrich Bonhoeffer's biography I saw how small my problems were. He was only 25, yet he already spoke against Hitler and for Christ in Nazi Germany. I am indebted to Saint Augustine, CS Lewis, John MacArthur, John Piper, Albert Mohler, Oswald Chambers, CH Spurgeon—and so much more.
Attend the Youth regularly and actively serve there. I would have strayed away or fallen into various temptations if not for the encouragement and instruction that I have received in our fellowship. Don't make your school work an excuse for not going to the Youth. Believe me, you will not die just because you set aside a school project for a while.
If you care for your friends, share the gospel to them. If you don't know where to begin, ask questions like, “What do you think of God?” That will open up many interesting conversations, and you will deepen your friendships even more. It will also open interesting avenues to discuss faith, salvation, and Jesus Christ.
