The Glitch

UNTIL GLITCH, I didn't enjoy computer games at all.

I'm a klutz at hand-eye coordination—at least that which involves pixels and running characters—a fact I've made peace with some years back, during the era of family computer and joystick arcade games (ask your older brothers, if you don't know what I'm talking about).

It doesn't help, too, that I have a hyper-competitive bent, something that inevitably wells up when I take on challenges. My sinful nature finds fertile ground. As with most losers, I hate losing—and what's worse than losing is getting frustrated that I've gotten so worked up because I lost.

But Glitch was different entirely. I'm using the past tense because the game is now ended. Was it like Sims? I have no clue. The initial attraction was how beautiful it looked, like an animated film but so much better, because the player was the director, and things just fell into place, according to the player's whims.

The game was an avenue for wild imagination, in a vast, mysterious world created by Giants. You whipped up a character, dressed him the way you liked, chose your own home and decorated it, walked on roads you liked to take, took on challenges you liked to conquer, and had fun while you were at it. The artistry was fantastic. The music was excellent. The font choice was appropriate. And the people, the random players I met along the way, were gracious and kind.

I dressed my character, bottledbrain, this way.

Let me explain. I have a photo, circa 2006, where I wore pretty much the same shirt. My brother and I had dinner at Rodic's (Shopping Center, UP Diliman). Of course I had pants on.

One regret I have is that I haven't immersed in it as much as I had wanted to. Still, I acquired basic skills  during my stint. I wanted to specialize in agriculture, and I liked having plants in my virtual yard.

Among the badges I earned, my favorite was "Butterfly Whisperer," the most useless badge in the world, but I liked the sound of it.

My favorite spot was my home, and this was my street.

I wouldn't call myself a good player, but if the measure of a game is how much fun the players had while playing it, then Glitch would certainly rank as the best.

"You little adventurer, you—nicely done," the Street Spirit told me once. I am grateful.

Many thanks to Katrina for introducing this game.
